Gratitude Over Entitlement

Growth

February 2022

“We are constantly thankful for the gifts we have been given and we show our thankfulness through our work. We work willingly and joyfully, tending never toiling.”

This value was originally called “joy” but we believe that gratitude goes one level deeper—gratitude always leads to joy. We see in the Christian tradition, as well as many other faith traditions, that when we live in a state of gratitude, we have reason to be authentically joyful. We believe that we have much to be grateful for, no matter how challenging our current season may seem. At Red Door, we work at a business that brings value to people every day and we are equipped to do our work well.

Many people who work with us say that we work incredibly hard, which is true, but we see our work as tending (i.e. taking care ofto the gifts that we have been given, rather than toiling (i.e. straining). We believe that our job on earth is to steward the blessings that we have been given, not to force, strive, or strain for that which is not given to us. This is why we can “run and not grow weary” (Isaiah 40:31) because our work is the natural overflow from living in a state of gratitude. Easier said than done, but gratitude is a value that we hold high and check ourselves with constantly.

Gratitude is not always a natural response, especially in our current age. Call it a flaw of human nature or gradual desensitization, but “thank you” is often an automated and vague reply. And sometimes it isn’t even vocalized at all. Whether in your business life or personal life, you can implement a conscious and active demonstration of gratitude by going through your day with attentive eyes. Instead of turning a blind eye to seemingly small daily occurrences, you can keep written records in a gratitude journal and reflect on all the things you felt thankful for at the end of your day. Practice self-talk and gratitude in your morning routine too. Remember that you can be just as grateful for trials that you encounter as you are for blessings.

We show gratitude by recognizing opportunities in front of us, praising good work, and celebrating the seasons. Our hope is that our gratitude rubs off on our guests and brings them joy when they come to a Red Door experience.
