In the last few years, there has been an increase in people thinking about EQ or Emotional Intelligence.

It falls in line with the idea of having self-leadership. John Maxwell said, “He who thinks he leads, but has no followers, is only taking a walk.” If you want to be a leader, you need to have people following you. So then the question is, would you be willing to follow yourself?
This is where self-leadership comes in. Self-Leadership is defined by Bryant and Kazan as “the practice of intentionally influencing your thinking, feeling and behaviors to achieve your objective/s.”
In order to have good self-leadership, there are two areas that you need to focus on. Yes, there is probably a much longer list in other places but these are the top two.
- Self-Talk: What are you saying to yourself about yourself? “I can’t do that,” “I will never do that,” “it’s just too hard.” We are always talking to ourselves about ourselves. - Feedback: What is the first thought that you have about getting feedback? Most people don’t like feedback. If you’re going to grow your self-leadership you have to enlist people to give you feedback so that you can grow as a leader. Think of feedback as a way to look at your blind spot.
When we intentionally focus on growing our EQ and really start to follow ourselves, we will begin the process of growing our self-leader. Make it your goal to be a leader worth following.
